Rio 180 Stand...
njstockley:
Hi All
I'm having some trouble in finding a stand for my Rio 180, so am starting to look for alternatives.
The tank came with this...
The stand is metal, very sturdy, and fits the tank perfectly. BUT, I'm a bit concerned about the lack of all-round bracing, as well as the fact that I live in a flat, and so the weight (which will be around 220kg when filled?) won't be evenly distributed on the floor. I know it's hard to tell from a picture, but what do you think about the stand?
As an alternative to a Rio 180 stand or the metal one that I've already got, I was thinking about trying to find a decent sideboard/cabinet, and strengthening the inside with some 2x2 bracing. It might be a good option, as I will be running an Ex1200 on the tank, and it's quite a big piece of kit! Has anyone done something similar to this?
Looking forward to your replies!!

It does look like a sturdy stand, though.
My suggestion is to build a wooden cabinet around it. For the bottom get one large piece of wood, then place the metal stand on it and build the rest of the cabinet around. That way the weight gets distributed evenly and the metal frame will be hidden inside.
You could then paint the cabinet any way you like. Also found a thread on PFK website where someone covered a second-hand stand with vinyl - the result was a rather smart looking stand.

I had thought of building a cabinet around the stand, but for the cost of the wood, and the time and hassle to build I think I would prefer to buy a cabinet and add the bracing. I've just seen http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250938583154&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:GB:1123#ht_500wt_1287 on ebay and the guy is happy to deliver. It's a great size, and would allow me to put one filter in each of the side compartments. I imagine it would take some bracing too, but it looks like a solid piece of furniture! What do you reckon?

+1 to what Lamzang has said, if you will put one big piece of wood under it will distribute the weight.

Forget the stand. :)
Go cheap, i would get breeze blocks, spray paint them black. Then get a kitchen worktop, cut to measure and put on top.
:) simple and cheap.
